Paon cooking Class....So Good! PDF Print E-mail

We were picked up from our villa at 8.30(free pick up in Ubud area) and driven to the markets where Puspa was waiting for us. She welcomed us and then proceded to walk us through the markets describing uses for different baskets, foods and spices. I love all the colours with bright red chillies, purple eggplants, orange carrots and all the shades of green! We then jumped back in the car and were driven out to their village area Laplapan where Puspa's husband Wayan talked us through how the families co-ordinate the rice fields and how the baby ducks learn to look for a coloured flag so they don't wander off into the wrong fields.

Both Wayan and Puspa speak very good english and have a wonderful, playful banter with each other throughout their talks. We are then welcomed to their beautiful home and we have a cold drink and are told about the living compound. The outdoor cooking area is amazing, its clean and well organized and Puspa describes and shows us all the ingredients we need to cook our dishes. My girls, aged 6 and 9 loved grinding up the nuts, garlic, chilli and ginger to make the sate sauce and also helped to cut up tempe and tofu and had the very important job of tearing up the kaffir lime leaves! We then got to sit at the outdoor table overlooking the valley and feast on the gastronomical delights we had created. It was such a wonderful day and I will take my girlfriends back when I return in March.
So if you are looking for a holistic cooking school in a Balinese home set in a traditional village then I can highly recommend Paon.
